   In the mouse tracking example “color: ‘purple’,” has to be “Linecolor: ‘purple’,”. The sourcecode is correct, but it’s not correct in the displayed source code.

   Hi Bas. In the flotr:select event, is there any way of knowing in what direction the selection was made? Because the ( for me :) ) logical and semi-standard behavior is that a left-to-right selection is a zoom inn and a right-to-left selection is a zoom out.

   Awesome! The only thing I miss is a way of putting dates on the x-axis, instead of just x-coordinates.

   Has anyone used Flotr with dates on the x-axis? How can I change the format of the x-axis so that it displays dates instead of numbers.

   @fai: Nope, that’s not possible.

   @josh: Try the option xaxis.tickFormatter and yaxis.tickFormatter. Here’s an example.

   Yeah, I tried that in the beginning…I guess my problem is a little more difficult, I’m trying to pass the tickFormatter option back in the JSON packet and I keep getting the following firebug error:
   axisOptions.tickFormatter is not a function

   despite this value being applied:
   function(n){ return ‘(’+n+’)'; }

   @josh: Ok, the Json is your problem. The encoder encodes the tickFormatter function to a string. So it cannot be executed, because it’s not a function. In firebug, take a look at the returned json, and the decoded json object. I’m pretty sure the tickFormatter option is a string, and not a function.

    You are correct, I had to set the tickformatter on the client side instead of trying to return it in the JSON packet from the server.

    This is a great library - it is exactly what I need to do plotting and is the smoothest drawing, most cross-browser compatible, and easiest to use of the half-dozen libs I tested. Thanks for this work!

    I do believe I have found a memory leak in it however, and have logged a bug with test case at the google project page.

    1. I’m trying to have some horizontal bars (kinda like a normal range) for my graph….like if I am looking at (time, cost) i want two horizontal lines (variable_time, 80) and (variable_time,100) with shading between the two lines. I saw the shading between the line and the axes but that’s not what i need.

    2. Is there a way to super impose two graphs that share the x axis but have different y axes? I am trying to show (time, cost) and (time, water_consumption) on the same plot.

    following the issue that josh had with a date tickFormatter function for the x axis, he said he fixed it by applying the tickFormatter client side, but what if I’m using JSON to generate the chart server side, is there any simple way to specify the formatter and send it back through JSON?

    I could do it by making if statements on client side to edit the returned JSON code based on what the graph selection was, but that seems an inefficient and painful way to do it.

    sorry for double post, but I wanted to also include that the JSON has a lot of arguments from the server, so I can’t just throw it away. Is there a simple way to allow flotr to call a function encoded in the JSON without converting all of it back and forth to a string type and editing it like that?

    Hi Bas,

    great script - thanks a lot! I am using it extensively and have just resolved a problem that took me hours to debug. So I’d like to share it.

    My script worked perfectly in Firefox but not in IE6. Somehow I wasn’t able to install Firebug lite on IE6 so I had to find something different.

    I found that the prototype method “onException” threw an error within the Ajax.Requester. But all I could see was the name of the error message “SyntaxError”.

    In fact, my JSON was indeed not valid - I had an additional comma after mouse options and before closing the options with an }.

    Anyway, to make a long story short, it seems that Firefox is a little more tolerant when it comes to validating JSON. So, folks, check your JSON thoroughly when trying to work cross-browser compatible.

    Sorry, if I did not use all the correct terms - I just would like to share this with other people who might come across the same problem. Maybe anybody can explain the background.
