Hi, I’m Bas Wenneker. I’m a third-year student Media & Knowledge Engineering at the Delft University. On this page you can read about me and my interests, or you can play with me.

From Java to Javascript

The thing that I really like to write about is javascript. In the early days of my computer career, I always thought javascript was some kind of toy language. Then, I came across script.aculo.us, with it’s various effects. At that time, Mootools didn’t exist yet (yeah I’m old skool =)), it was moo.fx that ruled the javascript FX scene with just 1.2kb of javascript magic. But after a while the effects began to bore, and I got fascinated by Prototype, which made javascript a really powerful language (Ajax, DOM). I’m not sure if Mootools existed at that time, but eventually I fell in love with it. I cheated on Mootools a few times by playing around with Dojo, jQuery and Ext. But after using these libraries, I still like Mootools the best. Though, I’m using Ext quite a lot for web applications I’m building at Solware, where I’m employed as a software engineer.

That’s basically my javascript career. At the moment I’m working on various projects, of which only a few will ever see daylight. On of the projects is Flotr, which is already out in the wild. Next to school, work and the projects, I’m trying my best to write interesting articles, and fooling around with Mootools.

This blog

You’re looking at the eighth incarnation of Solutoire.com. Overall, I’m pleased with the design, and it keeps evolving. I’m working on my English (Dutch and javascript are my native languages). Under the hood of this blog you can find an up-to-date WordPress blogging tool. To get even more from WordPress I installed the following plugins:

  • Akismet (keeps out spam comments)
  • Google XML Sitemaps
  • Feedburner Feed Replacement
  • Search Everything
  • Subscribe To Comments

Besides these I’m using a few plugins written by myself, nothing special though.

The icon set I used for the current design is called Two Tone and is created by Paul Jarvis. You can find the icons over here.

Well, that’s about it, I can’t think of anything else that should be on this page. I wish you a pleasant reading, and if you have any questions or comments or whatever, just drop me a line below or contact me from the contact page.
